How Materiality Shapes What Auditors Sample

Spreadsheet printouts with highlighted totals used during audit planning

When an auditor sets materiality, they are deciding which misstatements would change a reader’s view of the accounts. For a Taiwan manufacturer with thin margins, that threshold may sit closer to profit than to turnover. For a trading company with high volume and low markup, revenue and inventory often drive the conversation.

Performance materiality sits below the overall figure so that the sum of undetected errors stays within bounds. That is why a team may test every large receivable while sampling smaller balances with confirmation or subsequent cash collection evidence.

Clients sometimes ask why a modest expense account received little attention. The answer usually traces back to planning: if the account cannot move the opinion, scarce fieldwork days go elsewhere. Sharing your draft year-end pack early helps the team recalibrate if new balances appear after planning.

A practical tip for finance teams: flag unusual journals and one-off contracts in the first document drop. Auditors will still apply professional skepticism, but clear narratives shorten query cycles and reduce last-minute sampling expansions.
